Many guitar amplifiers have a distortion channel or you can called it overdrive, which will give it that dirty sound. The over drive distortion allows the chords to become more tenser than normal. What you should notice that is the clean tone will give you a more dissonant sound compared to your overdrive distortion.
The overdrive distortion also changes the melodies when you play. Sometimes you may find that your music will sound better with wider intervals. You may also find yourself playing in an angular style. These are tendencies that are naturally brought about by the effect. This brings more intensity to the playing sound. The other way you can achieve distortion is through the use of a standalone distortion pedal, it can make distorted sound you just need to adjust an amplifier with a distortion channel.
